what I stumbled into by following my curiosity and intuition turned out to be priceless later on. Let me give you one example:
当时里德学院提供的书法课程大概是全美最好的了。在这个大学里面的每张海报，每个抽屉的标签上全都是漂亮的手写美术字。因为我退学了，不用去上常规课，所以我决定去参加这个书法课程，去学学怎样写出漂亮的美术字。我学到了serif和san serif字体，学会了怎么样在不同的字母组合之中改变间距，还有怎么样才能做出最棒的印刷版式。那是一种科学永远捕捉不到的、美丽的、真实的艺术精妙，我对它着了迷。
Reed College at that time offered perhaps the best calligraphy instruction in the country. Throughout the campus every poster, every label on every drawer, was beautifully hand calligraphed. Because I had dropped out and didn’t have to take the normal classes, I decided to take a calligraphy class to learn how to do this. I learned about serif and san serif typefaces, about varying the amount of space between different letter combinations, about what makes great typography great. It was beautiful, historical, artistically subtle in a way that science can’t capture, and I found it fascinating.
这些东西对于我的生活毫无实际的用途，我也从没指望过有。但是10年之后，当我们在设计第一台Macintosh电脑的时候，我学的那些东西又回到我的脑海里。我把当时所学的那些东西全都设计进了Mac。那是第一台使用了漂亮的印刷字体的电脑。假如我当年没有在大学旁听这门书法课程，Mac就不会有这么多丰富的字体以及字符按比例间隔的字形。此后Windows照抄了Mac的设计，也就是说很可能就不会有今天这样子的个人电脑了。（注：原文作者个人观点。）假如我没有退学，就不会旁听这门书法课，今天的个人电脑也许就不会有这么好看的字体。当然了，我在大学的时候，还不可能预见这些点点滴滴之间的联系，但是，当我10年之后回顾这一切的时候，真的豁然开朗了。
