朗在废除奴隶制的运动中赞成屠杀奴隶主，指挥多起血战。于1859年11月2日被判决犯有叛国罪、谋杀罪和煽动叛乱罪，布朗在法庭宣布对他的判决时对法庭发表的陈述，第二天就在《纽约先驱报》登出。在他被处决的那一天，整个北方的人民都把他当做圣人和英雄，向他致敬。
