said, “It is an unseemly question, yet I will answer you. My father would make of me a reproduction of himself, so also would my uncle. My mother would have me the image of her farmous father, and my sister regards her seafaring husband as the perfect example for me to follow. My brother thinks I should be like him, a fine athlete. “And my teachers also, the doctor of philosophy, and the music-master, and the logician, they too were determined, and each would have me but a reflection of his own face in a mirror.
“Therefore I came to this place. I find it more sane here. At least, I can be myself.”
Then of a sudden he turned to me and he said,“But tell me, were you also driven to this place by education and good counsel?”
And I answered,“No, I am a visitor.”
And he answered,“Oh, you are one of those who live in the madhouse on the other side of the wall.”
青 蛙
盛夏之日，一只蛙对他的伴侣说：“恐怕我们的晚歌打扰了岸上房里的人。”
他的妻子回答道：“可是，他们白日里的谈话不也搅扰了我们的清修吗?”
雄蛙说：“别忘了我们晚上可能唱得太多了。”
雌蛙回答道：“别忘了，白日里他们很多时候也喋喋不休，大喊大叫。”
雄蛙说：“牛蛙用他那上帝禁止的轰鸣吵得街坊邻居不得安宁，你觉得如何呢?”
他的妻子又说了：“是，可那些来这岸边的政治家、神父和科学家们，搞得到处都喧嚣嘈杂，你又怎么说啊?”
“Therefore I came to this place. I find it more sane here. At least, I can be myself.”
